This quote discusses the idea that when one tries to fight or counteract something one does not agree with, one often finds oneself becoming more and more similar to the exact force one was attempting to combat.
Both works of literature can also be connected to the Friedrich Nietzsche quote, “When you look into the abyss, the abyss looks into you”. Both take place in forests, both hone in on “civilized” people discovering the “uncivilized” and unknown world of natives. The book State of Wonder by Ann Patchett and Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness contain many parallels and similarities.
